Bio
Since joining Wilson Ratledge, PLLC in 2004, Paul Toland’s practice has focused on workers’ compensation defense representing employers, insurers, and self-insureds. Mr. Toland has extensive experience at all levels of workers’ compensation litigation, including Mediations, Hearings at the Deputy Commissioner and Full Commission levels, and at the Court of Appeals. He has defended numerous claims involving asbestos exposure, chemical exposure, hearing loss, and other alleged occupational diseases. He also represents insurers in their subrogation claims. Mr. Toland has lectured to various professional groups on workers’ compensation issues and defense strategies.
A native of Massachusetts, Mr. Toland graduated from Williams College, where he held the school record in the indoor high jump for a number of years. He then worked in the field of College Textbook Publishing Sales, covering a territory that included New York and New Jersey. Thereafter, he obtained his law degree, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Mr. Toland then practiced law for several years in Massachusetts with Morrison Mahoney & Miller, focusing on insurance defense litigation, including motor vehicle liability, premises liability, and construction claims. In 1998, Mr. Toland moved to North Carolina and was associated with the law firm of Brooks, Stevens & Pope for a number of years, practicing primarily in the area of workers’ compensation defense.
Mr. Toland and his wife, Beth, are the proud parents of four children, including a set of triplets. In his spare time, Mr. Toland enjoys reading, traveling, and cheering for the Carolina Hurricanes as they continue their pursuit of another Stanley Cup.
